With over a decade of impactful work in government, nonprofit, and international sectors, Christelle N. Onwu has been making waves. Last year, she was honored as one of CUNY’s 50 Under 50, a testament to her remarkable contributions and leadership.
Christelle’s journey from Cameroon to the United States at the age of 16 is nothing short of inspiring. Initially aspiring to become a lawyer, she found her true calling in social work while attending John Jay College. There, she developed her skills in writing, critical analysis, and advocacy, and emerged as a campus leader, earning numerous awards and scholarships.
Her dedication to justice and community advocacy led her to become New York City’s inaugural African Diaspora Advisor, where she amplified the voices of the African diaspora community. Currently, she serves as an adjunct lecturer and advisor at Columbia University School of Social Work and is the founder of Express Connexion, a consulting firm dedicated to connecting New Yorkers with elected and nonprofit organizations.
Christelle’s recent appointment as the Equal Employment Opportunity Director at the NYC Department of Probation underscores her ongoing commitment to public service. With a bachelor’s degree from John Jay College and a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University, she continues to be a proud advocate for her community. Fluent in French, pidgin, and Eton, Christelle’s story is a shining example of resilience and dedication.
