Christelle N. Onwu's Biography
Christelle N. Onwu stands as a beacon of recognition, acknowledged by City & State's NYC 40 Under 40 Rising Star class of 2021, The Assembly of the State of New York, and the New York City Council. A distinguished 2021 Council on Urban Professional fellow and Coro New York Leadership 2017 ICLP fellow, Christelle boasts over a decade of senior-level experience across government, non-profit, and international sectors.
Passionate about fostering relations among diverse communities, Christelle is dedicated to fundraising, coalition building, mobilization, and political participation through a non-discriminatory lens. As a community advocate, public servant, and entrepreneur, she made history as the City of New York's inaugural African Diaspora Advisor. In this groundbreaking role, she tirelessly advocated and mobilized the African community across the five boroughs, providing an unprecedented voice to one of the fastest-growing immigrant groups in New York City while championing the causes of other communities.
Christelle's commitment extends to education, where she served as an Adjunct Lecturer at Columbia University School of Social Work and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her courses, focusing on Justice in the Africana World and Environmental and Institutional Racism in the Africana Department, reflect her dedication to shaping informed perspectives.
Currently, Christelle serves as an advisory member on the Language Assistance Advisory Committee of the New York City Civic Engagement Commission, contributing valuable insights to foster community engagement.
Educationally, she holds a bachelor's degree in Justice and Humanities Studies with minors in English, History, and Philosophy from CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her pursuit of knowledge continued with a Master's of Science in Social Work (Policy Specialization and International Social Welfare for Services to Refugee and Immigrants Field of Practice) at Columbia School of Social Work. Notably, her article titled "Understanding Female Genital Cutting in the United Kingdom within Immigrant Communities" was published in the Social Work Review.
