Christelle N. Onwu's Biography
Christelle N. Onwu is a distinguished leader with over 15 years of experience driving positive change within the government, nonprofit, and international sectors. Her commitment to equity and inclusion has earned her recognition from prestigious organizations, including City & State's NYC 40 Under 40 Rising Star class of 2021, as well as accolades from the Assembly of the State of New York, the Public Advocate, and various city agencies. Her work has spanned a diverse range of roles, from advising on policy for African Diaspora communities to shaping more inclusive hiring practices for the City of New York. This breadth of experience has provided her with a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the complexities of creating equitable systems.
Currently, Christelle serves the NYC Department of Probation as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Officer/Director, Language Access; Disability Services Facilitator & 55-a Coordinator; and Digital Inclusion Officer. In these multifaceted roles, she champions accessibility and inclusivity for all employees. She guides staff on EEO matters, ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and works diligently to create an accessible work environment, both physical and digital. Christelle's commitment extends beyond compliance; she actively fosters a workplace culture where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.
Christelle's dedication to public service is underpinned by a strong academic foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Justice Studies from CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Social Work Policy from Columbia University School of Social Work. Her commitment to lifelong learning and professional development is further evidenced by her participation in esteemed fellowships, including the Bridges New York Fellowship, the Council on Urban Professionals Fellowship, and the Coro New York Leadership Fellowship. These experiences have honed her leadership skills and deepened her understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing urban communities.
